Does contain beta-carotene (vitamin A)?

No, Preserve Mac Forte does not contain beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. The National Eye Institute reported the results from their AREDS 2 study in May of 2013 and they found that when replacing the beta-carotene from the original AREDS formula with 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin that it slows age related macular degeneration even more and reduces risk of vision loss. Research studies have suggested a link between high doses of beta-carotene and increased cases of lung cancer in people who smoke. Replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin makes this formula safe for smokers and increases the effectiveness of the vitamin supplement in slowing AMD.
