What are free radicals?

Research has shown that the activity within the cells of the body produces a type of oxygen that is quite reactive and unstable. This oxygen is called a free radical. This unstable oxygen is essential for the body to be able to fight outside infections or to reduce areas of inflammation within the body. Unfortunately these free radicals also can cause harm to some other chemicals of the body like proteins, lipids, and even all-important DNA. Because there is a very high level of lipids in the area of the eye called the retina, it is particularly sensitive to the damaging effects of free radicals. These free radicals cause oxidation and that leads to damage. That is why the protective supplements are called ANTI OXIDANTS. Their mission is to reduce the level of excess free radicals. This in turn leads to a slowing of the macular damage.
